Upturned, level, or downturned?

Canthal tilt measures the line from the inner to the outer eye corner against the iris-center reference. The sign tells you the direction; eye opening height and width add the shape.

These two schematics keep the corner angle at +6° and change only the vertical opening. Tilt describes direction; the height-to-width ratio adds the shape information used in our eye-profile rules.

Hunter-like, upturned and compact

An upward angle combined with a compact vertical opening creates a long, rising outline. Our Hunter-like label describes this combination of measured features.

Almond-like, elongated outline

A relatively elongated opening with a level-to-upward angle creates an almond-like outline. This label applies after checking the Hunter-like combination.

How this profile is selected

Shape labels follow fixed outline rules: Hunter-like uses mean tilt ≥ 2° and eye height/width ≤ 0.29; almond-like uses mean tilt ≥ −1° and height/width ≤ 0.35. Opposite side angles beyond ±1° take priority as contrasting directions. Otherwise, mean tilt above +1°, below −1°, or between them selects upturned, downturned, or level-leaning. With only corner measurements, the profile uses direction alone. Hunter-like and almond-like describe resemblance from tilt and aperture; eyelid exposure and socket depth are not inputs. PSL and the four scores continue to use their existing model curves.

The angle range models 2-pixel placement variation at each eye corner plus the iris-reference-line variation. Smaller eyes in the working image produce a wider range. A range crossing 0° calls for checking the points; it does not establish a level angle.

Detection is automatic. Start with one clear, front-facing photo showing both eyes.

  1. Keep the camera at eye level

    Look straight ahead with your head upright and chin relaxed. Avoid looking up or down into the lens.

  2. Keep both eye corners visible

    Use even light and a sharp original photo. Move hair away from your eyes and avoid glasses glare, squinting and beauty filters.

  3. If the lines miss the corners, try another photo

    Check the automatic lines against the visible inner and outer corners. If they do not line up, retake or replace the photo. Camera position, expression and image detail can change the reading.

Does positive canthal tilt mean Hunter eyes?

Positive tilt describes the upward direction. Our Hunter-like profile combines tilt with a compact eye opening. A more open eye can have the same angle and receive an upturned or almond-like label. The type describes tilt and aperture resemblance, not measured socket depth.

Is a larger positive angle always better?

Angle size describes a steeper slope. Scoring follows the existing feature curves, which can have several positive-contribution ranges. Read the type for shape and the contribution cards for how each measurement participates in the four scores.

Why can another photo give a different eye type?

Head position, expression and image detail affect the automatically detected corners and eye opening. Near a rule boundary, small measurement changes can change the label. Compare clear photos taken at the same camera height and with a relaxed expression.
